Step Into the Story at the Ulster American Folk Park

Located just outside Omagh, the Ulster American Folk Park offers a truly immersive journey through emigration history. This open-air museum allows visitors to follow in the footsteps of those who made the voyage from Ulster to America.

From traditional thatched cottages to a full-scale emigrant sailing ship and a recreated American frontier settlement, the experience brings to life the hopes, hardships and resilience of those who left home to build new lives.

As part of the America 250 commemorations, the park will host a special American Independence Weekend on 4th and 5th July.

American Independence Weekend: A Celebration for All

This lively, family-friendly event blends history, culture and entertainment, offering something for all ages.

Across the weekend, visitors can enjoy:

• Live historical re-enactments, including a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence
• Firing displays from the Minstrel Boys Living History Group, sharing stories from the American Revolutionary and Civil Wars
• Hands-on experiences exploring the evolution of firearms from the 1600s to the 1900s
• Curator talks offering deeper perspectives on American independence, including Indigenous and African American histories
• Family-friendly activities such as traditional swing boats, crafts, face painting and interactive games
• Live music and food experiences, including ‘Hamely Kitchen’ with Paula McIntyre, inspired by Appalachian dishes with Ulster roots

Visitors can also enjoy a relaxed BBQ, visit the museum café, and browse the gift shop.

A special addition for 2026 is a new Presidential Portraits display, highlighting the strong ancestral links between Northern Ireland and the United States.
