In 2026, the United States marks a remarkable milestone – the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Known as America 250, this moment offers an opportunity not only for celebration, but for reflection on the people, places and journeys that helped shape a nation.
Here in Omagh and the Sperrins, that story is part of the landscape.
A Shared Story Across the Atlantic
From the 18th century onwards, thousands of people left Ulster’s shores in search of new opportunities in America. Many of those emigrants came from this very region, carrying with them traditions, skills and stories that would go on to influence early American life, particularly in areas such as Appalachia.
Their legacy continues to resonate today. Music, storytelling, craftsmanship and strong family ties all form part of a shared cultural thread that still connects Northern Ireland and the United States.
Across the region, visitors can explore places that bring this history to life – but nowhere tells the story quite as powerfully as Ulster American Folk Park.
Step Into the Story at the Ulster American Folk Park
Located just outside Omagh, the Ulster American Folk Park offers a truly immersive journey through emigration history. This open-air museum allows visitors to follow in the footsteps of those who made the voyage from Ulster to America.
From traditional thatched cottages to a full-scale emigrant sailing ship and a recreated American frontier settlement, the experience brings to life the hopes, hardships and resilience of those who left home to build new lives.
As part of the America 250 commemorations, the park will host a special American Independence Weekend on 4th and 5th July.
