Cairn Sunday at Mullaghcarn

The annual Cairn Sunday walk is on Sunday 28th July 2024 at Gortin Glen Forest Park, Co Tyrone.  People will be undertaking the yearly tradition of walking to the summit of Mullaghcarn Mountain, for this year’s ‘Cairn Sunday’.

The annual walk takes place on the last Sunday in July, and this year will be no different – walkers will once again be joined by their ‘Giant’ friend  The Guardian of the Sperrins to greet them when they reach the peak!

The giant sculpture at Mullaghcarn is one of a series of giants in the Sperrins. The walk will start from the forest cafe at 10am, and everyone is welcome.

The walk will start at the ‘Trail Head’ information panel, beside the Cafe building, and will follow the purple waymarked ‘Mullaghcarn Trail’ signs. The walk will take around three hours and is a moderate walk.

Friends of the Glens will meet at forest cafe Brie’s Barista Bar at 10am and will walk the Mullaghcarn Trail to the summit to visit the Giant on the Cairn. Parking is free at the main carparks and toilets are available beside the forest cafe.

Walkers can start their walk anytime at the ‘Trail Head’ information panel, beside the forest cafe, and follow the waymarked ‘Mullaghcarn Trail’ signs.

The walk is on a tarmac and gravel terrain, and is a  moderate walk,  but it should be noted that the trail’s gradient can be quite challenging, particularly towards the end of the route. Dogs are very welcome, but owners should keep them on a lead.

The tradition of climbing to the top of Mullaghcairn is thought to date back over 1,000 years. Cairns have been used from Prehistoric times to present. The act of adding a stone to the cairn, is a deep rooted tradition, that by adding this rock you are preserving the integrity of the cairn, referencing the age-old practice of people, over generations, carrying stones to the summit to add to the cairn there. It is believed that the cairn marks a place regarded of great religious significance; perhaps a burial place. The practice of climbing Mullaghcairn is likely to have had a pagan origin; historians detail how people sought to be closer to their gods.

The introduction of Christianity saw the nature of the arranged climb to the top of Mullaghcarn become an annual day of pilgrimage. Blueberry Sunday’ as it was to be known was marked by participants performing religious practices at the summit. Through time, ‘sports days’ became a feature there. Activities including berry picking, eating and drinking, singing and dancing enhancing what had become a notable annual occurrence. The pilgrimage and subsequent festivities appealed to all age groups.

Notably, there were those who regarded attendance an ideal ‘courting’ or matchmaking’ opportunity; it was a place where lasting good relationships began!

In 1997, 300 hardy participants climbed Mullaghacarn on the last Sunday of July. In doing so, they revived a tradition that had been lost in time. ‘Cairn Sunday’, as it is now known, is about more than participating in a physical activity; it brings a community and its visitors together in the beautiful picturesque Gortin Glen Forest Park landscape.

A huge crowd-pleaser, full of 1960’s Mo-Town songs and wild, irreverent humour, this is the inside story of The Troubles. Fortunes and Misfortunes

Daisy Fortune is a downtrodden yet hard-working woman, who is supporting an idle husband and a good-for-nothing son. She loses her job as a waitress in ‘The Cosy Corner’ after her son, Nathan’s pet lizard ‘Kylie’, gets loose in the premises. She manages to scheme her way into a job as a housekeeper for Bill and Oonagh Delaney.

Oonagh has unrealistic aspirations of literary greatness and she is busy organizing a poetry workshop in her home. She has invited renowned and eccentric poet, Aubrey Peacock to attend. Meanwhile, there is tension in the Delaneys’ marriage as a result of Bill’s flirting with Wanda Hunt, the mother of one of his pupils. However, between unwanted lavender, laced punch and an escaped lizard, the workshop turns into a complete disaster and the tension between Oonagh and Wanda finally explodes.

3 Bucks Left

Join Cowboy Lavin, the biggest (and only) TikTok star of his generation, as he shares his hilarious stories about growing up in Castletown and life on the road. Cowboy will be accompanied by fellow Hardy Bucks legend Frenchtoast O’Toole, who may or may not be back on the drink. 3 Bucks Left is a spin-off of County Mayo’s own Hardy Bucks. This Satire is laden with comedy and pathos throughout, inspiring many other acts in its wake. Now a decade later, it remains one of Ireland’s favourite comedy shows. It’s been a wild ride of ups and downs. Crude, lofty, self-deprecating introspection, coupled with rowdy philosophies. Such misadventures are not for the faint of heart. Ruggedly charming, extremely funny, riding close to the wind.
