The Máirtín O’Connor Trio Concert

Formed in the early 2000s, The Máirtín O’Connor Trio has become a prominent force in traditional Irish music. With acclaimed albums “Crossroads” and “Going Places,” they’ve toured globally, from the Sydney Opera House to New York’s Symphony Space Centre, winning over audiences in Ireland, Britain, Europe, North America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

At the trio’s core is Máirtín O’Connor, a revered accordionist known for his time with De Danann and contributions to Riverdance. His masterful playing and composing have earned him legendary status in Irish music.

Cathal Hayden, another remarkable talent in the group, is an All-Ireland champion on fiddle and banjo, with a founding role in Four Men and a Dog. His influence extends to inspiring emerging musicians and collaborations with renowned artists. Completing the trio is Seamie O’Dowd, a versatile multi-instrumentalist with a notable career touring with groups like Dervish and working with esteemed musicians. Seamie’s talents have been recognized with a nomination at the RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards. Together, The Máirtín O’Connor Trio delivers a whirlwind tour of Irish musical traditions, pushing boundaries while staying rooted in tradition. Their remarkable performances and musical prowess have earned them accolades and a dedicated following, solidifying their place as Irish music pioneers on the global stage.

This year’s theme, “Snakes Alive in ’25”, promises a lively and family-friendly festival packed with music, dance, and community spirit. Inspired by the legendary tale of St. Patrick driving out the snakes, the theme sets the stage for a creative and vibrant showcase of Omagh at its best.
Supported by ‘Housing for All‘ Shared Housing Programme the streets will come alive with music from ‘Tis Not Easy’ and St Eugene’s Brass and Reed Band and family fun. Compered by Radio Star Country favourite DJ Stevie King, the carnival parade will snake its way from South West College along Drumragh Avenue up through the town centre with colourful floats, performers, and groups creatively interpreting this year’s theme.
Following the parade, the very popular ‘Pluck Savage’! will provide live music for a ‘Ceili on the Cobbles’, where the crowd can get involved in favourites such as the Siege of Ennis, the Walls of Limerick and more.
In addition to the entertainment in the town centre, the Strule Arts Centre will host a range of family-friendly activities including arts and crafts, storytelling, face painting and music.
Speaking about the event, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor John McClaughry said,
“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to providing the best quality experience for residents and visitors and it is fantastic to have free events in Omagh, like the St. Patricks Day celebrations, available for all to enjoy.
I encourage local businesses, community groups, and individuals to get involved in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, to showcase Omagh as a vibrant and welcoming town with a rich shared heritage. On behalf of the council, I would like to extend thanks to the Department for Communities and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme for their support for the event in Omagh which promises to be an inclusive and memorable celebration of culture, talent, and community spirit.”

Spar Omagh Half Marathon & 5K Run

The Omagh Half Marathon & 5k Run, now in its 35th year, started off as a 10mile race in 1981. In 1986 it was a 12mile race but changed to the Half Marathon distance in 1987. Omagh Junior Chamber organised it from 1981 – 1996 before it was cancelled for three years 1997- 1999. The local running club Omagh Harriers regrouped and relaunched the event in March 2000. The SPAR Omagh Half Marathon Race & 5K Run/Walk has had a steady increase in participation, starting with 240 in the year 2000 but with the slick organization of the hard working Omagh Harriers Half Marathon Committee, it is now one recognized as one of the most prestigious running events in the country and we expect a record 4500 participants in 2025 to mark our milestone anniversary.

With the Covid 19 pandemic having a major impact on businesses, society and sporting events, the committee took the decision to cancel the race in March 2020 but instead ran it as a very successful virtual race with many participants running the ‘Omagh 1/2’ in many overseas exotic locations. Unfortunately the Covid situation persisted which meant there was to be no race at all in 2021.

Back with a fresh look our event sold out in record time this last two years so enter early for 2025 to guarantee your place as we will sell out again before the New Year. There is a  quality top guaranteed for All Half Marathon entries plus newly designed bespoke medals for All finishers including the 5k finishers. Chip timing, fast course, race pacers, street entertainment, finish line refreshments are all on offer to make this one of the top events in the 2025 sporting calendar.

Mid Ulster Drama Festival

Mid-Ulster festival dates 2025
Friday 21st March – Saturday 29th March

Frederick Douglass Day Talk

The Ulster American Folk Park opened in 1976, and tells the story of emigration from Ulster to America in the 18th and 19th centuries, using objects and buildings to reflect experiences in both places. We have been working to incorporate marginalised histories into the narrative at the Folk Park. This includes bringing to the fore the stories of Indigenous Peoples, many of whom suffered greatly as a result of colonisation, as well as enslaved Africans who were exploited by some of the Ulster emigrants whose stories we profile.

Frederick Douglass Day is celebrated annually on the 14th February, a date chosen by Douglass to be his birthday. Douglass was born into slavery in 1818 and never knew his real birth date. He went on to become one of America’s great abolitionists, writers and leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century.

To mark the occasion, join Liam Corry, Curator of Emigration, for an informal talk looking at Douglass’s life and Ulster’s links with Douglass and slavery in the United States.

What to know

  • All events are charged at general admission cost, and include entry to the Folk Park for the whole day.
  • This event is suitable for 12 years +.
  • All under 16-year-olds should be supervised by an adult.
